Massive Security Sweep Follows Armed Attack on Israeli Diplomatic Mission in Istanbul
Turkish security forces have launched a nationwide crackdown, arresting nearly 200 individuals in connection with a violent shootout outside Israel's consulate in Istanbul. Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced the extensive operation on Wednesday, revealing that 198 suspects were detained across 34 provinces in simultaneous raids targeting the Islamic State group, also known as Daesh.
Deadly Confrontation in Business District
The security operation comes just one day after armed assailants opened fire on the Israeli diplomatic mission located in Istanbul's Levent business district on the European side of the city. According to official reports, at least one gunman was killed during the exchange of fire with police, while two officers sustained light injuries during the confrontation that witnesses described as lasting at least ten minutes.
Turkish media identified the deceased attacker as a 32-year-old man with established links to the Islamic State organization. The interior ministry confirmed his connections to what they described as a "terrorist organization," while revealing that the two wounded gunmen—who were brothers—had additional ties to drug trafficking activities.
Extensive Investigation and Detentions
Of the nearly 200 individuals arrested in the sweeping security operation, twelve have been placed in pre-trial detention, including the two wounded attackers who were hospitalized following the shootout. The justice ministry provided these details as part of their ongoing investigation into what Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned as a "treacherous attack."
"We will not be cowed by such incidents," declared Israeli officials in response to the attack, while President Erdogan vowed to continue Turkey's fight against "all kinds of terrorism." The incident occurred at a time when no Israeli diplomats were present at the mission, as most had been evacuated following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks in Israel that sparked the ongoing Gaza conflict.
Attack Details and Security Response
Security footage from the incident showed one of the attackers armed with an automatic rifle, dressed in beige cargo pants and carrying a backpack. Officials revealed that the assailants arrived in a rented vehicle from Izmit, approximately 86 kilometers (50 miles) from Istanbul, before launching their assault on the diplomatic facility.
The Turkish police response has been swift and comprehensive, building on increased security measures implemented after previous terrorist incidents. In December, Islamic State members opened fire on police in Yalova, about 90 kilometers southeast of Istanbul, killing three officers and wounding nine others. Following that attack, Turkish authorities rounded up 125 suspects in similar nationwide raids.

This latest incident adds to a troubling pattern of Islamic State violence within Turkey's borders. The extremist group has carried out several deadly attacks in recent years, including a particularly devastating assault at an Istanbul nightclub in 2017 that claimed 39 lives. These repeated incidents have prompted Turkish security forces to maintain heightened vigilance and conduct regular operations against suspected militants throughout the country.
No group has officially claimed responsibility for Tuesday's shootout at the Israeli consulate, but the established connections to Islamic State through the deceased gunman and the nature of the security response strongly suggest the extremist organization's involvement. The extensive arrests demonstrate Turkey's commitment to addressing security threats through coordinated law enforcement actions across multiple provinces simultaneously.
