Wasp Sightings on the Rise in Winnipeg's Whyte Ridge Neighbourhood
Residents of Winnipeg's Whyte Ridge neighbourhood are reporting a noticeable increase in wasp sightings this spring, with experts pointing to mild winter conditions as a contributing factor. A wasp was observed on a dandelion in the area on June 1, 2026, captured in a photograph by Joseph Bernacki of CTV News Winnipeg.
The uptick in wasp activity has raised concerns among local homeowners, who have noted more insects around gardens, patios, and garbage bins. Entomologists suggest that the warmer-than-usual winter allowed more wasp queens to survive, leading to larger colonies this season.
While wasps play a beneficial role in pollination and pest control, their aggressive behavior during late summer can pose risks to people with allergies. Residents are advised to take precautions, such as securing food waste and sealing entry points to homes. The City of Winnipeg has not issued any specific warnings but encourages residents to report large nests to pest control services.
