The Calgary Surge are entering the 2026 Canadian Elite Basketball League season with a blend of youthful energy and seasoned experience, aiming to capture their first championship after falling short in previous finals. New head coach Perry Huang, who also serves as an assistant coach with the South Bay Lakers, is focused on steady improvement despite a challenging 0-3 start to the campaign.
Building on Past Success
In three prior seasons, the Surge have reached the CEBL final twice, including last year's 79-73 loss to the Niagara River Lions, and made the semifinals once. The franchise has also built a strong community presence, but the ultimate goal remains a title. Huang acknowledges the championship aspirations but emphasizes short-term growth. "I can't focus on August and a championship right now. I've got to focus on what it is today," he said.
Overcoming Early Struggles
The Surge have stumbled out of the gate, with their latest defeat a 111-101 loss to the Vancouver Bandits. However, Huang sees positive signs. "My feet are not just wet, they're muddy right now. We're just trying to dig ourselves out of the mud and rack up some wins," he noted. Key areas of focus include improving defense and solidifying offensive identity.
Upcoming Games
The Surge host the Scarborough Shooting Stars on Thursday at WinSport Event Centre, followed by a provincial rivalry game against the Edmonton Stingers on Sunday in Red Deer. The team hopes home games will provide momentum for a turnaround.
With a roster blending young talent and veteran leadership, the Surge aim to trend upward as the season progresses toward the summer playoffs.
