The Carolina Hurricanes evened the Eastern Conference finals with a dramatic 3-2 overtime victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night. Nikolaj Ehlers scored the game-winner at 8:47 of the extra period, sending the series back to Montreal tied at one game apiece.
Game Recap
The Hurricanes came out strong in the first period, outshooting the Canadiens 12-5 but failing to find the back of the net. Montreal opened the scoring early in the second period when Cole Caufield beat Carolina goaltender Frederik Andersen with a wrist shot from the left circle. The Hurricanes responded quickly, as Sebastian Aho tied the game just over two minutes later with a power-play goal.
Carolina took its first lead of the game midway through the third period when Andrei Svechnikov redirected a point shot past Montreal netminder Jakub Dobes. However, the Canadiens answered with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, as Nick Suzuki scored on a scramble in front to force overtime.
Overtime Heroics
In the extra session, both teams had chances before Ehlers ended it. The Danish winger took a pass from Jaccob Slavin at the blue line, skated into the slot, and fired a wrist shot that beat Dobes high on the glove side. The goal set off a celebration at PNC Arena and gave Carolina a much-needed win after dropping Game 1 on home ice.
Key Performances: Ehlers finished with one goal and one assist, while Aho added a goal and an assist. Andersen made 28 saves for the Hurricanes. For Montreal, Suzuki had a goal and an assist, and Dobes stopped 32 shots.
Series Outlook
The series now shifts to Montreal for Games 3 and 4. The Canadiens will look to regain home-ice advantage, while the Hurricanes aim to build on their momentum. Game 3 is scheduled for Tuesday night at the Bell Centre.
