From Streets to Living Rooms: Murals Transform Home Interiors in 2026
Wall decor is evolving beyond traditional paint, framed art, and wallpaper. Murals, once primarily associated with public alleyways and exterior spaces, are now making a significant impact inside homes across Canada. This shift represents a growing trend in residential interior design, where custom-painted walls offer unique artistic expressions.
BC Home + Garden Show 2026 Showcases Live Mural Painting
The upcoming BC Home + Garden Show 2026 will feature a special "Paint with Purpose" event where artists transform blank canvases into vibrant murals. Muralist and illustrator Rachel Lyon will lead live painting demonstrations, highlighting how murals can enhance residential spaces. This exhibition underscores the increasing popularity of mural art in home environments.
Calgary-based artist Rachel Lyon has been painting murals professionally for ten years. She has observed a notable increase in commissioned residential work during this period. "The last three or so years have been increasingly busy," Lyon explained. "Whether that's because I'm growing my business or gaining more recognition, I'm not entirely certain. I live in a city that strongly supports the arts and public art, which certainly helps."
Overcoming Homeowner Concerns About Murals
Many homeowners initially hesitate to choose murals over conventional decor options. Common concerns include changing tastes, outgrowing the design, and potential impacts on resale value. Lyon addresses these worries with practical advice. "When I bought my house, there were three kids-themed murals, and we don't have children," she shared. "We simply sanded them, primed them, and painted over them. You would never know they were there. It really is just paint."
Surprisingly, most of Lyon's residential projects have not involved typical children's themes like dinosaurs and clouds. "I've completed a few kids' rooms, but I've done more powder rooms, guest rooms, and living rooms—more adult-themed spaces," she noted. "That might just reflect the style of my art. Some of my muralist peers do numerous children's rooms, so it's definitely becoming more popular with families."
Custom Designs and Artistic Process
Lyon's artistic style leans toward "botanicals and nature elements—plants and flowers—but nothing too extravagant." She emphasizes that every client receives a completely custom design. "They don't select from a preset book of designs," Lyon stated. "I collaborate with them on their inspiration and preferences, and they see everything mocked up digitally before I even touch the paint, so they have a clear idea of what they're getting."
Clients often approach her with specific ideas, sending Pinterest boards or color palettes. The painting process typically takes one to two days per 100 square feet, depending on the level of detail. "If it's extra detailed, it will take longer," Lyon explained. "If it's simpler, it could be completed in one day. Every artist works differently, but that's generally the sweet spot for me."
Public Art Transitions to Private Spaces
Exterior murals have gained prominence through events like the Vancouver Mural Festival, which concluded in 2025 after nine successful years. Numerous local artists and firms, including Natalie Way, Kim Hunter, and Studio Muze, now accept residential mural commissions, bridging the gap between public and private art.
Mural painting often occurs in public view, whether on streets, in lobbies, or inside homes. Lyon has grown accustomed to audiences observing her work. This visibility helps demystify the process and encourages more homeowners to consider murals as viable decor options.
The rise of residential murals reflects a broader movement toward personalized and artistic home environments. As homeowners seek unique ways to express their style, custom wall art offers a dynamic alternative to mass-produced decor. With events like the BC Home + Garden Show 2026 promoting this trend, murals are poised to become an increasingly common feature in Canadian homes.
