Former Olympic skiing champion Bode Miller, 48, was arrested earlier this month in Idaho on drug-related charges, just three days before the tragic anniversary of his infant daughter's drowning death. Miller, who won gold at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games, faces two misdemeanor counts: possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Details of the Arrest
According to Fremont County Magistrate Court records, the incident occurred on June 6. TMZ reported that Miller was allegedly found with 4.1 grams of psilocybin, commonly known as hallucinogenic mushrooms. Miller has pleaded not guilty to both charges and was released after posting a US$5,000 bond.
Miller's Statement on Instagram
On Tuesday night, Miller addressed the arrest in a statement on Instagram. He explained, “I was pulled over for accelerating while passing another vehicle on a highway in Idaho. My friend, who was traveling with me, had a small amount of cannabis and a cannabis pipe in his possession, which I was unaware of. We fully cooperated with the officer. I am hopeful the misdemeanor charges will be dropped once the facts are reviewed.” His next court appearance is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on July 29.
Background and Family Tragedy
Miller is one of the most decorated skiers in U.S. history, with six Olympic medals (one gold, three silver, two bronze) and two overall World Cup titles (2005 and 2008). He and his wife Morgan suffered a devastating loss on June 9, 2018, when their 19-month-old daughter, Emeline, drowned in a neighbor's swimming pool. The couple has been married since 2012 and shares six other children. Miller also has a son and a daughter from a previous relationship.
