London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) is celebrating the one-year anniversary of its Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Program, a milestone that highlights the unique needs of younger cancer patients. One young patient shared their story, emphasizing the importance of specialized care during a challenging time.
A Year of Progress
The program, launched in June 2025, focuses on patients aged 15 to 39, a group often overlooked in traditional oncology settings. Over the past year, it has provided tailored medical and psychosocial support, helping patients navigate treatment while maintaining their education, careers, and social lives.
CTV's Lauren Stallone reports that the program has already served dozens of patients, offering services such as fertility preservation, mental health counseling, and peer support groups. The milestone event featured testimonials from patients and families, underscoring the program's impact.
Patient Story Inspires
One young patient, who wished to remain anonymous, described how the program helped them feel understood and supported. "They don't just treat the cancer; they treat the whole person," they said. "I felt like I wasn't alone in this fight."
The program's success has prompted LHSC to expand services, including partnerships with local schools and employers to ease the transition back to normal life after treatment.
Looking Ahead
As the program enters its second year, LHSC plans to launch a research initiative to study long-term outcomes for adolescent and young adult cancer survivors. The goal is to improve survival rates and quality of life for this unique patient population.
