Dutch health officials have given the green light for the MV Hondius cruise ship to set sail again after it was quarantined due to a hantavirus outbreak. The vessel, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, had been held at the Port of Rotterdam since May 18, 2026, following reports of multiple passengers and crew members falling ill with symptoms consistent with hantavirus infection.
Quarantine and Investigation
The ship was placed under strict quarantine immediately upon arrival, with public health authorities conducting thorough inspections and testing. Samples taken from the ship confirmed the presence of hantavirus, a rodent-borne disease that can cause severe respiratory issues in humans. The Netherlands Health Service worked closely with international health organizations to ensure all necessary precautions were taken.
Containment Measures
Crew members in protective gear were seen sanitizing the vessel, while affected individuals were isolated and provided medical care. No fatalities were reported, and most patients have since recovered. The quick response by Dutch authorities helped prevent a wider outbreak.
Clearance to Sail
After a comprehensive evaluation, health officials declared the ship safe to resume operations. The MV Hondius will undergo final preparations before departing on its next scheduled voyage. Oceanwide Expeditions expressed gratitude to the Dutch authorities for their professionalism and assured passengers that enhanced health protocols would be implemented moving forward.
This incident highlights the importance of stringent health measures in the cruise industry, particularly in regions where zoonotic diseases are a concern.
