Ottawa Fire Services has reported that ten fires in the city so far this year have been linked to lithium-ion batteries, raising concerns about the safety of common household devices. Among the incidents, a Stittsville house fire sparked by a lithium-ion battery in a power bank caused an estimated $750,000 in damage.
Rising Trend in Battery-Related Fires
The fires have been attributed to batteries found in various devices, including power banks, laptops, and electric scooters. Fire officials emphasize that lithium-ion batteries can overheat and ignite if damaged, overcharged, or exposed to extreme temperatures.
Safety Recommendations
Ottawa Fire Services advises residents to use only manufacturer-approved chargers, avoid overcharging devices, and store batteries in cool, dry places. They also recommend never disposing of lithium-ion batteries in regular trash, as they can cause fires in garbage trucks and landfills.
Homeowners are urged to install smoke alarms on every level of their homes and to have an escape plan in case of a fire. The department is also working with local retailers to promote safe battery disposal and recycling programs.
