Teenager Macklin Celebrini has been named captain of Canada's men's hockey team for the upcoming world championships, and he will have the legendary Sidney Crosby as a teammate. The tournament also sees the United States looking to defend its championship title.
Celebrini's Rise to Leadership
Celebrini, who turned 18 in June 2025, has had a remarkable ascent in the hockey world. After being selected first overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 2024 NHL Draft, he made an immediate impact, earning a spot on the NHL All-Rookie Team. His leadership qualities were evident throughout his rookie season, leading to his appointment as captain for the world championships.
"It's an incredible honor to wear the 'C' for Canada," Celebrini said in a statement. "To do it alongside Sid, who I've looked up to my whole life, is a dream come true."
Crosby's Presence Bolsters Team
Sidney Crosby, a three-time Stanley Cup champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist, brings unparalleled experience and skill to the Canadian squad. At 38, he remains one of the game's elite players, having recorded 94 points in 82 games this season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. His addition to the team provides a significant boost, both on and off the ice.
"Sid is the ultimate competitor and leader," said Canada's general manager, Doug Armstrong. "Having him on the team not only strengthens our lineup but also helps mentor younger players like Macklin."
United States Aims to Repeat
The United States enters the tournament as the defending champion, having won gold last year in a thrilling overtime victory against Finland. The American roster features several NHL stars, including forwards Auston Matthews and Jack Eichel, as well as defenseman Quinn Hughes. Head coach John Hynes emphasized the team's determination to repeat.
"We have a deep, talented group that knows what it takes to win at this level," Hynes said. "Our goal is clear: bring the gold medal back home."
Tournament Outlook
The world championships, held annually, feature the top international hockey nations. This year's event takes place in Helsinki, Finland, and Stockholm, Sweden, from May 14 to 30. Canada is in Group A with Finland, Sweden, and Germany, while the United States is in Group B with Russia, Czech Republic, and Switzerland.
Canada's opening game is against Finland on May 15, while the U.S. begins its title defense against Russia on the same day. With Celebrini and Crosby leading the charge, Canadian fans have high hopes for a strong performance.
