Canadian Astronaut Jeremy Hansen Poised for Historic Artemis II Moon Mission

Colonel Jeremy Hansen, a native of London, Ontario, is set to embark on a groundbreaking journey that will etch his name into the annals of Canadian history. Scheduled for launch on Wednesday, Hansen will join his NASA crewmates aboard the Artemis II mission, venturing farther into space than any human has traveled before.

A Journey Beyond Earth's Orbit

This mission marks a significant milestone as it represents the first time a Canadian astronaut will travel beyond Earth's low orbit. The Artemis II crew, consisting of NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and CSA astronaut Jeremy Hansen, will not only journey toward the moon but will also fly past it, exploring deeper regions of space.

"It's a pretty historic way to go to the moon," remarked fellow Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk in an interview with The Canadian Press. "It's the first time that crews have gone back there since Apollo."

Training and Preparation

After years of intensive preparation and training, Hansen expressed his gratitude and excitement in a bilingual video posted to social media. "After years of preparation and training, we are finally here," he stated. "It's been a privilege to train alongside my Artemis II crew mates and, of course, my CSA colleague Jenni Sidey-Gibbons who has done a tremendous job as my backup."

Sidey-Gibbons, a 37-year-old engineer from Calgary, has been instrumental in ground control communications and preparations for future lunar missions. Her role highlights the collaborative nature of space exploration and the potential for Canadians to achieve even greater milestones, such as walking on the moon.

Inspiring Future Generations

Hansen, a former Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 fighter jet pilot and father of three, hopes his mission will inspire young Canadians to dream big. "My hope is Canadians everywhere come together and watch this mission unfold," he said. "That those who remember the Apollo era feel that same spark once again and that young Canadians see what is possible when we dream big."

His journey from joining the 614 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in London, Ontario, to becoming an astronaut exemplifies the power of ambition and dedication.

Countdown to Launch

The launch is scheduled for Wednesday evening from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Across Canada, events are being organized to celebrate this historic moment, including a joint gathering by Let's Talk Science, University of Toronto-St. George campus, Melon D'Oh La La, and The STEAM Sisters.

As the world watches, Hansen's mission serves as a reminder of what humanity can achieve through cooperation and innovation. "When we aim high and work together we can achieve incredible things in space and here on earth," Hansen emphasized.

This mission not only advances space exploration but also strengthens Canada's legacy in the cosmos, adding Jeremy Hansen to the esteemed list of Canadian legends who have reached for the stars.
