Olympic Biathlete Laegreid Reveals Health Toll After Cheating Confession
Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Laegreid, who made headlines after tearfully admitting to cheating on his girlfriend during a live television interview following his bronze medal win at the 2026 Winter Olympics, has disclosed that the ensuing stress has taken a significant toll on his physical health. The athlete revealed in a recent interview with Norwegian public broadcaster NRK that he experienced a pronounced physical reaction to the incident, which occurred during the Milano-Cortina Games last month.
Physical and Emotional Strain Following Public Admission
Laegreid, who won bronze in the men's 20 km biathlon event, described how the fallout from his confession led to difficulties with eating and sleeping, resulting in unintended weight loss. "I think anyone who has experienced something similar can understand. It was a physical reaction, that's just how it is, it's simply part of the process," he told NRK. The athlete expressed hope that upcoming biathlon events would provide opportunities for him to regain his form through proper nutrition, stating, "I hope we get plenty of good food so I can eat well and get back into shape."
The Shocking Olympic Interview That Went Viral
During his post-race interview with NRK at the Winter Games, Laegreid first thanked his supporters before unexpectedly confessing to infidelity. "Half a year ago I met the love of my life. The world's most beautiful and nicest person. Three months ago I made the mistake of my life and cheated on her, and I told her about that a week ago. This has been the worst week of my life," he said emotionally. Despite his athletic achievement, Laegreid emphasized that his personal turmoil had overshadowed the bronze medal, remarking, "I had the gold medal in life, and I am sure there are many people who will see things differently, but I only have eyes for her. Sport has come second these last few days."
Attempts to Navigate the Aftermath and Public Scrutiny
When questioned about how he managed to compete under such circumstances, Laegreid reflected on his role as a public figure, saying, "I try to be a good role model and I did something stupid. I got a nice video from the club at home and I used that as motivation today. As I said I want to be a good role model but I have to admit when I get something wrong." He declined to identify the woman involved, noting, "I do not want to say who it is. She has had enough to deal with after last week but I hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel for us both."
Response from the Ex-Girlfriend and Further Apologies
The ex-girlfriend, who remains anonymous, responded in the Norwegian press, writing, "Even after a declaration of love in front of the whole world, it's hard to forgive. I did not choose to be put in this position, and it hurts to have to be in it." Laegreid issued another statement expressing regret for bringing his personal life into the public eye on what should have been a celebratory occasion for Norwegian biathlon. "I deeply regret that I brought up this personal story on what was a joyous day for Norwegian biathlon. I am not quite myself and I am not thinking clearly," he told VG.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion about the pressures faced by athletes both on and off the field, highlighting the complex interplay between personal conduct and public perception in the world of elite sports.
