Medicine Hat Tigers Overpower Regina Pats 6-2 in WHL Playoff Opener

The Regina Pats put forth a determined effort in their return to the Western Hockey League playoffs, but ultimately fell short against the offensive juggernaut that is the Medicine Hat Tigers. Game 1 of their first-round series saw the Tigers rally from an early deficit to secure a convincing 6-2 victory on home ice, taking a crucial 1-0 series lead.

Early Promise Fades as Tigers Take Control

Making their first playoff appearance since the 2022-23 season, the seventh-seeded Regina Pats showed they were not intimidated by the second-seeded Tigers. After Medicine Hat opened the scoring in the first period with a goal from Shaeffer Gordon-Carroll, assisted by Liam Ruck, the Pats responded late in the period. Rookie Mathis Paul tipped in a point shot from defenseman Kolton Bridgeman with just 43 seconds remaining, knotting the game at 1-1.

The Pats carried that momentum into the second period, taking a 2-1 lead just two minutes in. Jace Egland showcased his skill, toe-dragging around a Tigers defender before beating goaltender Jordan Switzer. However, that lead proved short-lived as the WHL's most potent offense awakened with a vengeance.

Tigers' Offensive Onslaught Secures Victory

Medicine Hat defenseman Jonas Woo began his standout performance by blasting home a point shot just two minutes after Egland's goal, tying the game at 2-2. Woo struck again three minutes later, poking home a loose puck past Regina goaltender Taylor Tabashniuk to give the Tigers a 3-2 advantage they would never relinquish.

The Tigers continued to press their advantage midway through the period. On the power play, Andrew Basha set up defenseman Bryce Pickford with a slick backdoor pass, and Pickford—who scored an impressive 45 goals during the regular season—buried his first of the playoffs to extend the lead to 4-2.

After Egland was denied on a shorthanded breakaway opportunity, Woo completed his hat trick with 1:10 left in the second period, banging home another loose puck to make it 5-2. The Tigers added one more in the third period when import forward Yaroslav Bryzgalov beat Tabashniuk, with Woo recording an assist to cap off a four-point night.

Post-Game Reflections and Looking Ahead

In net, Jordan Switzer made 16 saves for the victory, while Taylor Tabashniuk stopped 19 of 25 shots for Regina. Despite the lopsided score, Pats assistant coach Ken Schneider found positives in his team's performance.

"I thought our guys played a pretty good solid game," Schneider told play-by-play voice Dante De Ciara after the game. "We didn't give up a ton of shots tonight and we have in the past against these guys. They came out hard with their ears pinned back but our guys, we stood our ground. We did a really good job, and we competed tonight. And I'm proud of our guys for that."

Schneider added, "I don't think we need to feel bad about our game tonight. We know we're in tough and that's typical when you're playing a first-place team."

The series continues with Game 2 scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. in Medicine Hat, where the Pats will look to even the series before it shifts to Regina.
