Massive Indoor Bike Park and Sports Complex Planned Near Calgary Border
A colossal indoor bike park and multi-sport facility is poised to open just southeast of Calgary, promising to become one of North America's premier destinations for action sports enthusiasts. The UNREAL Athletic Centre, spanning approximately 200,000 square feet with an additional 40,000 square feet of outdoor dirt track, is scheduled to begin operations in early 2027.
A Comprehensive Action Sports Ecosystem
According to project leaders, UNREAL represents far more than just a conventional bike park. The facility is designed as a complete action sports ecosystem that will accommodate skateboarding, scooters, climbing, fitness training, martial arts, and various other athletic pursuits under one massive roof.
"Our aim is to build a world-class training destination for Calgary and Western Canada," explained UNREAL CEO Jerrod Hoskins, who is spearheading the project alongside co-founder Goe Novello. "We've incorporated input from top athletes who understand what a serious progression and performance environment should look like."
Strategic Location and Year-Round Operation
The facility will be strategically positioned near the intersection of Peigan Trail and Stoney Trail S.E., just off Frontier Road in Rocky View County, immediately bordering Calgary's southeastern limits. This prime location, combined with its indoor design, will enable year-round operation regardless of weather conditions—a significant advantage over outdoor facilities.
What distinguishes UNREAL from existing offerings in the Calgary region is its unprecedented scale and the integration of multiple action sports within a single, purpose-built environment. "The whole idea is to create a year-round destination where different athletes can progress in the same facility without clashing with each other," Hoskins emphasized.
Community Impact and Economic Benefits
The $30 million development is projected to generate more than 80 new youth employment opportunities across various sectors including hospitality, retail, operations, coaching, and event management. Beyond job creation, the facility has substantial potential to boost year-round tourism and stimulate economic activity in both Calgary and nearby Chestermere.
"The long-term goal is to make it a destination that attracts users and events from well beyond Calgary," Hoskins noted, highlighting plans to host training camps, clinics, competitions, and other sporting events.
Designed for Progression and Performance
The facility's layout has been meticulously planned with athlete input to optimize training and progression. "This is a structured, purpose-built progression facility, not a random collection of ramps," Hoskins clarified. "The design separates high-speed riding from creative flow areas and supports the broader athlete experience around it."
Co-founder Goe Novello emphasized the project's community-building aspirations: "We see UNREAL as more than a facility. It is an opportunity to build a lasting home for action sports in this region and create a destination that serves both the local community and visitors coming in from outside Calgary."
Construction is currently in its preliminary phases, with the ambitious target of welcoming athletes and families during the first quarter of 2027. The facility aims to serve as both a high-performance training ground for elite athletes and an accessible recreational space for local families and riders of all skill levels.
