The Toronto Blue Jays' hopes for a swift return from pitcher Shane Bieber have been officially postponed, with the team transferring the right-hander to the 60-day injured list on Monday. This administrative move guarantees that Bieber, who has been working through inflammation in his right elbow, will be unavailable for game action until at least May 21, which marks the 50th game of the MLB season.
A Season of Delayed Gratification
Bieber's decision to exercise his $16-million US player option and return to Toronto this season was met with optimism, but that enthusiasm is now tempered by a prolonged recovery timeline. Acquired from the Cleveland Guardians at last year's trade deadline, the 2020 American League Cy Young Award winner appeared in just seven games for the Blue Jays as he continued his rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery.
The 30-year-old veteran has been deliberate in his recovery process, throwing off a mound but yet to begin a rehab assignment. This cautious approach confirms that his ramp-up is intentionally slow, though whether the Jays anticipated such an extended absence remains unclear.
Rotation Woes Deepen
Bieber joins several other projected starters on the injured list, including:
- Trey Yesavage: The rookie sensation is considered the front-runner to return first, potentially reaching 70 pitches in his next minor-league start and possibly rejoining the big leagues next week.
- Jose Berrios: Currently estimated to be a couple of weeks behind Yesavage in his recovery schedule.
- Cody Ponce: Out for the season after suffering a knee injury during his Blue Jays debut.
The rotation concerns have been magnified by recent performances, with Patrick Corbin, Eric Lauer, and Max Scherzer combining to surrender 19 earned runs over a single weekend. This has contributed to Toronto's struggling 6-9 start to the season.
Roster Implications
The transfer to the 60-day IL served a practical purpose: creating roster space for infielder Lenyn Sosa, whom the Blue Jays acquired in a trade with the Chicago White Sox. Bieber's inactive list status dates back to his initial assignment to the 15-day IL, making May 21 an optimistic return target even without this latest move.
With Bieber sidelined for approximately one-third of the season, the Blue Jays will need to rely on their remaining healthy starters as they continue their schedule. The team returns to action in Milwaukee on Tuesday, with Kevin Gausman slated to start against the Brewers, followed by Dylan Cease and recently acquired Patrick Corbin.
