Sol Zanetti Leads Québec Solidaire as New Co-Spokesperson

New Leadership for Québec Solidaire

Sol Zanetti has been elected as the new co-spokesperson for Québec Solidaire, marking a significant leadership transition for the left-wing political party. The election took place on Saturday, November 8, 2025, during a party gathering in Quebec City where approximately 400 activists witnessed Zanetti's victory.

Election Results and Competition

Zanetti secured his position with 50.4 percent of the vote in the first round, defeating two other candidates: Étienne Grandmont, his colleague from the Taschereau riding, and former party candidate Yv Bonnier Viger. The newly elected co-spokesperson represents the Quebec City riding of Jean-Lesage and brings a background as a former philosophy professor to his leadership role.

Despite receiving support from several former party legislators during the campaign, Zanetti did not gain endorsement from current caucus members, who instead favored his competitor Grandmont. This division within the party highlights the challenges facing the new leadership.

Challenges and Vision for the Future

In his victory speech, Zanetti acknowledged the "steep slope" ahead for Québec Solidaire, which currently trails in public opinion polls. The party faces the urgent task of reviving its political fortunes with the provincial election scheduled for next year.

Zanetti emphasized the growing threat of authoritarianism worldwide and stressed the need for immediate action. He also articulated his vision of reconnecting with what he described as Quebec's "heritage as dreamers," including his personal aspiration to see the province become an independent country. As a fervent separatist, this vision aligns with his long-standing political convictions.

The new co-spokesperson will share leadership responsibilities with Ruba Ghazal as Québec Solidaire prepares for the upcoming electoral battle. The party's performance in next year's provincial election will serve as the first major test of Zanetti's leadership and his ability to mobilize support for the leftist platform.
