RCMP in Fort McMurray are investigating after dozens of vehicles had their tires slashed overnight, in what appears to be a coordinated vandalism spree. The incident was reported early Tuesday morning, with multiple calls coming in from residents across several neighborhoods.
Extent of the Damage
Police estimate that at least 40 vehicles were targeted, with tires slashed on cars, trucks, and SUVs parked on streets and in driveways. The affected areas include parts of downtown Fort McMurray and the Thickwood and Timberlea neighborhoods. No suspects have been identified, and the motive remains unclear.
“We are asking anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in their neighborhood overnight to contact us,” said RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney. “This was a significant and senseless act of vandalism that has caused considerable inconvenience and expense for many families.”
Community Impact
Residents woke up to flat tires and were forced to arrange for repairs or replacements, with some reporting delays getting to work or school. Local tire shops have reported a surge in calls, and some are working overtime to meet demand. The total cost of the damage is not yet known, but estimates suggest it could run into the tens of thousands of dollars.
“It’s frustrating and expensive,” said resident Mark Thompson, whose truck was among those vandalized. “Whoever did this caused a lot of trouble for a lot of people.”
Police Appeal
RCMP are reviewing security camera footage from homes and businesses in the area and are asking anyone with dashcam or surveillance video to come forward. They are also encouraging residents to report any suspicious activity immediately. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
