The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has launched an investigation after a Calgary Police Service member shot a suspect during a confrontation on Deerfoot Trail on June 21, 2026.
Details of the Incident
According to a statement from ASIRT, the shooting occurred when officers responded to a call on Deerfoot Trail, a major highway in Calgary. The suspect was shot during an altercation with police and later died at the scene. The identity of the suspect has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
ASIRT is the provincial agency responsible for investigating incidents involving police that result in serious injury or death. The investigation will examine the circumstances leading up to the shooting, including the actions of both the officer and the suspect.
Police and Community Response
The Calgary Police Service has confirmed that the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in such incidents. “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic event,” said a police spokesperson. “We are cooperating fully with ASIRT’s investigation.”
Community leaders have called for transparency and a thorough investigation. “We need to ensure that all facts are brought to light,” said a local advocate. “The community deserves answers.”
Ongoing Investigation
ASIRT has deployed a team of investigators to the scene and is appealing for witnesses to come forward. Anyone with dashcam footage or information is urged to contact ASIRT. The investigation is expected to take several weeks to complete.
This incident marks the third police-involved shooting in Alberta this year, according to ASIRT records. In 2025, there were 12 such incidents across the province.
