Regina police are investigating a fire that destroyed the interior of the Ukrainian National Federation (UNF) Regina Branch hall as arson. The Regina Police Service (RPS) arson unit is now leading the investigation after Regina Fire and Protective Services (RFPS) determined the fire was intentionally set.
Fire Details
RFPS responded to the 1700 block of St. John Street around 6:40 a.m. on June 13 after receiving reports of smoke coming from a building. Fire crews found flames visible from the rear of the building and were able to extinguish them quickly. A police spokesperson confirmed the building was the UNF hall.
Surveillance Footage
Police are seeking help to identify multiple individuals captured on what appears to be surveillance footage from the early morning hours of June 13. The RPS release states, "Investigators are asking the public for assistance in identifying the people in the photos. (Officers) would like to speak to them in relation to this investigation."
Community Impact
The UNF, established in the 1930s, has worked for decades to nurture and maintain Ukrainian culture by hosting social and cultural events. The Regina Branch regularly had a pavilion in the Mosaic Festival of Cultures and recently served as a sanctuary for refugees affected by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The fire has temporarily halted the hall's seasonal programming, but events are scheduled for the fall with the help of local donations and the UNF board of directors. A GoFundMe page has also been launched.
How to Help
The RPS is asking anyone with information to call 306-777-6500 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
