Fugitive in Parents' Murder Arrested After 10-Day Manhunt

Jordan Sangwin, 46, who had been on the run for 10 days after allegedly killing his parents, was arrested Saturday evening in Mimico Creek Park in Toronto without incident, according to sources. He now faces two counts of first-degree murder.

Arrest Details

Toronto Police officers apprehended Sangwin on behalf of Peel Regional Police, who had warned the public he was considered armed and dangerous. The arrest occurred nearly 10 days to the hour after his parents, Carol, 70, and Garwood (Gary), 70, were found slain by blunt-force trauma at about 7 p.m. on June 18 on Briarwood Ave. in Port Credit. Notably, Sangwin was arrested on the very day of their funeral.

He was found in a makeshift shelter inside Mimico Creek Park near Lake Shore Blvd. and Legion Rd. after a tip from the public. A nearby resident alerted police to a small encampment along the creek, leading to the discovery. Official identification took several hours, but by late evening, police confirmed it was Sangwin.

Manhunt and Public Assistance

During a news conference at Peel police headquarters on Sunday, Peel’s homicide unit commander Insp. Mike Mavity thanked the public for their help, stating that they “allowed us into your homes to review video.” He reported that police received 25 tips over the 10 days in Peel Region and Toronto.

“To the Toronto Police Service, thank you so much for your continued efforts and collaboration with us to not only locating Jordan, but collecting evidence along with way,” Mavity said.

Victims and Suspect Background

The slain couple was well-known in Mississauga. Gary was known as Port Credit’s carpenter, while Carol was famous for her gardening and her passion for her kids and grandkids. Sangwin was known to police but did not have a previous criminal record. The first-degree murder charges have not been tested in court.

There had been several sightings of Sangwin in the area in the days leading up to the arrest, including one episode where he eluded police by jumping into backyards. Police released a June 21 photograph showing Sangwin appearing healthy, but sources said he showed signs of fatigue after 10 days on the run.

It is believed Sangwin fled the murder scene on foot, walking along the shores of Lake Ontario and making his way up into the Mimico Creek area. He had also been spotted near Humber Bay and High Park.
