One person is dead and multiple people were injured, including a Toronto firefighter, after a two-alarm blaze early Sunday morning in North York. The fire occurred just hours after a fatal crash in Brampton that left one man dead and five others injured.

Fire at Victoria Park Avenue apartment

Firefighters responded to the blaze at an apartment building located at 1420 Victoria Park Ave., south of Eglinton Ave., around 2 a.m. on June 28, 2026. Upon arrival, they found one occupant in a unit that was fully involved in fire, according to Toronto Fire Services.

Two other residents of the building were also hospitalized, along with a firefighter. Fire Chief Jim Jessop later stated on social media that the firefighter's injuries were minor. The other two occupants were treated for smoke inhalation, as reported by CityNews.

"Thinking of the loved ones of the deceased and wishing the injured firefighter a speedy recovery," Jessop said in a post on X. "Thank you to all responding crews for their work."

Police and the Ontario Fire Marshal's office are investigating the cause of the blaze.

Fatal crash in Brampton

Earlier that night, at approximately 10:45 p.m. on June 27, Peel Regional Police responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of McVean Dr. and Countryside Rd. in Brampton. A sedan traveling eastbound on Countryside allegedly ran a red light and collided with another sedan heading southbound on McVean.

The male passenger in the second vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of that vehicle was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the vehicle that ran the red light and a passenger suffered life-threatening injuries, another passenger had life-altering injuries, and a fourth sustained non-life-threatening wounds.

Const. Laurie McCann said, "Due to the fact that next of kin has not been notified, I will not be providing any further information in relation to any of the injured parties. Our major collision bureau has taken over the investigation and charges are pending."

All roads in the area have since reopened.

Additional crash on Steeles Avenue

Peel Regional Police also dealt with a four-vehicle collision early Sunday on Steeles Ave. at the northbound Highway 410 ramp in Brampton. Three people were rushed to a trauma centre, including one with critical injuries that were later downgraded to non-life-threatening. Two other individuals were in stable condition.
