A 33-year-old Edmonton man is facing serious charges including attempted murder following a violent knife attack on law enforcement officers at a downtown transit station earlier this month, according to Edmonton Police Service officials.
Violent Confrontation at Transit Station
The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. on March 1, 2026, when a transit peace officer and two Edmonton Police Service officers were conducting routine patrols at the Corona LRT station. During their patrol, the officers encountered a man who was openly consuming alcohol in the public transit facility.
When the officers approached the individual to address the violation, the situation escalated dramatically. According to police reports, the man suddenly produced a concealed knife and attempted to stab the responding officers. Despite the violent nature of the attack, no officers or members of the public sustained injuries during the confrontation.
Swift Arrest and Additional Charges
Law enforcement personnel managed to subdue and arrest the suspect at the scene without further incident. Following the arrest, investigators discovered that the same individual was allegedly involved in a separate criminal incident that occurred approximately thirty minutes before the knife attack.
Police determined that the suspect had reportedly robbed a central Edmonton liquor store located in the area of 113 Street and Jasper Avenue. This connection between the robbery and the subsequent attack on officers has resulted in additional charges being filed against the accused.
Official Police Statement
Inspector Jon Morrison of the Edmonton Police Service investigation response team addressed the incident in an official statement, emphasizing both the fortunate outcome and the sobering reality of police work.
"While we are grateful that no officers or members of the public were injured, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers all levels of law enforcement face on a daily basis," stated Morrison.
"This is also an example of how crime and disorder continue to impact all corners of our city; from the business that was robbed, to the LRT patrons who may have felt unsafe during their commutes, to the officers on proactive duty who were attacked with a weapon. This is why we must continue to have a proactive presence in public spaces."
Multiple Serious Charges Filed
The accused, identified as 33-year-old Morgan Banman, now faces a substantial list of criminal charges related to both incidents. The charges include two counts of attempted murder, three counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and robbery.
These multiple charges reflect the severity of the alleged offenses and the comprehensive nature of the police investigation following the events of March 1.
Ongoing Investigation and Public Assistance
The Edmonton Police Service continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding both the liquor store robbery and the knife attack at the transit station. Authorities are seeking any additional information from the public that might assist with their investigation.
Individuals with relevant information about either incident are encouraged to contact the Edmonton Police Service directly at 780-423-4567. The police emphasize that even seemingly minor details could prove valuable to their ongoing investigation.
This case highlights the unpredictable dangers that law enforcement officers encounter while performing their duties in public spaces, particularly within transit systems that serve thousands of Edmonton residents daily. The successful apprehension of the suspect without injury to officers or civilians demonstrates both the training and professionalism of Edmonton's law enforcement personnel in responding to potentially lethal situations.
