Calgary Police Charge Suspect in South Asian Extortion Case Involving Daycare Threats
Calgary police have formally laid charges in their ongoing investigation into extortion crimes specifically targeting the South Asian community, with alleged threats directed toward daycare businesses located outside the city limits. This development marks a significant step in a complex case that has involved multiple serious incidents over recent weeks.
Multiple Incidents Documented in Investigation
Investigators have documented several concerning incidents connected to this extortion investigation between March 4 and March 22, 2026. These include:
- A shooting at a residential property
- Repeated acts of property damage
- Suspicious activity observed at multiple daycare centers outside Calgary
- Ongoing intimidation tactics targeting victims
The Calgary Police Service Organized Crime Unit, working with support from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, believes these incidents are all related to ongoing extortion attempts. These criminal efforts reportedly use intimidation, property damage, and shootings to demand large sums of money and attempt to transfer control of businesses from their legitimate owners.
Police Response and Community Impact
Calgary police have emphasized that they do not believe there was any immediate risk to children at the daycare facilities involved. However, due to the sensitive nature of the locations targeted, the matter was treated as a high priority investigation from the outset.
CPS Superintendent Jeff Bell stated that due to the complex and serious nature of the extortion activity observed, investigators are working diligently to understand the full scope of these crimes. "These charges represent an important step forward, but this is only the beginning of our enforcement efforts," Bell said. "We want to be very clear: Calgary is not a place where extortion, intimidation or violence will be tolerated. We are taking a hard stance and will continue down this path."
Suspect Charged and Court Appearance Scheduled
Through their investigation, police have charged 45-year-old Rana Cheema with extortion and uttering threats. Cheema is scheduled to appear in court on April 22, 2026, to face these charges. This arrest represents part of a coordinated Calgary Police Service effort aimed at groups involved in extortion attempts across the city, where victims have reportedly received threats through international phone calls and various social media platforms.
Superintendent Bell emphasized the community impact of these crimes, noting that "many victims are living with fear, uncertainty, and, in some cases, hesitancy to come forward. Our message to them is that you are not alone, and we will support you. We urge anyone who may have been a victim or has information to come forward. We need to have all of the information to ensure people are held accountable for their actions."
