MSNBC anchor Ali Velshi has voiced deep unease about the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, citing the country's 'so-called democracy' and its 'unresolved racial politics.' During his Sunday show, Velshi argued that anniversaries are imperfect records and often gloss over the racial dynamics underlying much of America's history and politics.
Velshi's Criticism of US Celebrations
'In America's case, anniversaries often gloss over the racial dynamics underlying much of America's history and politics, issues that remain unsolved, because America has never actually fully reckoned with its racist past and its original founding sin of slavery,' Velshi said. He noted that while the nation will mark the 250th anniversary of its founding in one month, there is a deep unease about the celebrations.
Rights and Voting Concerns
Velshi pointed to fundamental unrest fomented by racism, stating that women and Black Americans have seen their rights taken away. He highlighted that the Voting Rights Act has been effectively gutted and that several states continue to gerrymander congressional maps ahead of the midterm elections, with the explicit effect of taking away political power from Black Americans.
Born in Kenya and raised in Canada, Velshi became a U.S. citizen in 2015. He empathized with other Americans who may be hesitant to fully enjoy the festivities. 'If you've got conflicting feelings about America's upcoming anniversary — like you want to celebrate the ideals that America strives for, which are noble and should be celebrated, but lament the state of the country — you're not alone. At least I'm with you on this,' he said.
Online Backlash
Velshi's heartfelt words were met with racism online, highlighting the very issues he addressed. The response underscores the ongoing racial tensions in the country as it approaches its 250th birthday.
