Edmonton Bus Driver Is East Turkistan's PM in Exile

A Dual Life: School Bus Driver and Prime Minister in Exile

For over two decades, Abdulahat Nur has driven a school bus in Edmonton, Alberta. Currently, he transports children to the Edmonton Islamic Academy in the city's northwest. He arrived in Canada from China via Kyrgyzstan 25 years ago, and he and his wife have raised four daughters. On the surface, his life appears ordinary. However, Nur is far from an average bus driver. He is also the internationally recognized Prime Minister in Exile of East Turkistan.

A Voice for the Uyghur People

Nur is a vocal critic of the Chinese government, denouncing its treatment of the Uyghur ethnic minority. He calls on world leaders to condemn Beijing for what he describes as genocide in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. His government-in-exile urges nations like Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom to censure China. In 2021, U.S. Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo officially recognized China's actions as genocide, citing forced sterilizations, abortions, and coercive measures against Uyghur women.

From Teacher to Prisoner

East Turkistan, an independent nation until 1949, was annexed by China. Nur, a former teacher, educated his students about the region's unique history, language, and culture. His lessons drew the attention of Chinese authorities, leading to his blacklisting and multiple imprisonments. He recalls being crammed into small cells with 10 to 15 others, receiving only water and bread twice daily. The conditions were deplorable, with no washroom and poor ventilation. Prison authorities subjected detainees to propaganda, urging them to abandon their religion, language, and ethnic identity.
