OPP Launches Holiday Safety Campaign Amid Extreme Heat
OPP Holiday Safety Campaign Amid Extreme Heat

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have launched a heightened presence on roads, trails, and waterways this week as part of a holiday safety campaign aimed at reducing crashes and fatalities. The initiative coincides with Canada Day celebrations and an ongoing heat wave, with Toronto becoming the hottest spot in Canada as temperatures climb to 34°C.

Increased Patrols Across Multiple Terrains

OPP officers are conducting enhanced patrols on highways, off-road trails, and lakes and rivers to enforce traffic laws and promote safe behavior. The campaign focuses on impaired driving, speeding, and boating under the influence, which are leading causes of summer fatalities. According to OPP statistics, the long weekend period often sees a spike in collisions and drownings.

Heat Wave Adds Urgency

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Toronto and surrounding areas, with humidex values making it feel above 40°C. The extreme heat has prompted Canada Day parade organizers to prepare for heat-related emergencies, advising participants to stay hydrated and take breaks. The OPP reminds motorists to never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, as interior temperatures can become lethal within minutes.
