Canadian Blood Services is urging Canadians to donate blood ahead of Canada Day, as the organization faces increased cancellations during the summer months. Cheryl Russell, business development manager, highlighted the heightened need for blood during holiday periods, when regular donors are often unavailable.
Increased Demand During Holidays
“During holidays, the need for blood doesn’t take a break,” Russell said. “We see a surge in demand as hospitals continue to treat patients, but donations often drop because people are busy with celebrations or travel.” Canadian Blood Services reports that summer cancellations have risen, putting pressure on the blood supply.
How to Donate
Donors are encouraged to book appointments at local clinics or attend pop-up events. On Canada Day, several donation centers will be open to accommodate those who wish to give blood as part of their holiday activities. The organization emphasizes that one donation can save up to three lives.
Canadian Blood Services operates across the country, with a goal of maintaining a seven-day supply of blood products. As of late June, inventories are below target in many regions. The agency urges eligible donors to schedule appointments online or by phone.
