Seven Stolen Dogs Escape Captivity, Band Together for 17-Km Journey Home in China

In a heartwarming tale reminiscent of a Disney movie, seven stolen dogs in northeastern China managed to escape their captors and embarked on a determined 17-kilometer trek back to their home village. The incident, which unfolded in Changchun, Jilin province, has captivated millions online, showcasing the remarkable resilience and camaraderie of these animals.

A Pack on a Mission

The dogs, including a corgi, a German shepherd, a Pekinese, golden retrievers, and Labradors, were first spotted walking along a busy highway last week. According to local reports, they had been stolen from their owners and were making their way back home. A man identified only as Lu filmed the pack, noting how they moved in unison, with the corgi taking on a leadership role by repeatedly checking their surroundings and ensuring the group stayed close together.

"They resemble a band of little brothers in distress, moving in unison — nothing like stray dogs," Lu told Chinese media outlet Dahe Daily, as reported by the South China Morning Post. He attempted to guide the dogs to safety but was ignored, prompting him to share the video on Douyin, China's version of TikTok.

Escape and Return

Volunteers from the Bitter Coffee Stray Dog Base, who tracked the dogs using drones and on-foot efforts, revealed that the animals had escaped by chewing through a cage inside a truck. The suspected dognappers were believed to operate a dog-meat shop, adding a grim backdrop to the story. Despite the odds, all seven dogs successfully completed their journey and were returned to their owners, who came from three different homes in the same village.

The highway where Lu spotted the dogs was approximately 17 kilometers from their village, highlighting the impressive distance they covered. In China, stealing a dog is treated as a criminal offence, with penalties ranging from fines to prison time depending on the animal's value. However, no information has emerged on the thieves involved in this case, and it remains unclear if an investigation has been launched.

Internet Sensation

The dogs' story quickly went viral on Chinese social media, with videos of their journey racking up more than 230 million views. Their determination and teamwork have resonated with audiences worldwide, turning them into internet sensations. This incident not only underscores the strong bonds between the dogs, who typically roamed freely together in their village, but also raises awareness about pet theft and animal welfare issues.

As the dogs settle back into their homes, their tale serves as a powerful reminder of the loyalty and intelligence of our canine companions, inspiring hope and admiration across the globe.
