Edmonton's Food Bank is entering the new year with significant financial backing but a notable gap in physical food supplies, following the conclusion of its major annual holiday drive.
Campaign Results: A Financial Success, A Food Shortfall
The organization's festive giving campaign, which ran for eight weeks throughout November and December of 2025, successfully achieved its monetary target of $4.5 million. However, the drive collected only 240,000 kilograms of food donations, reaching just 80 per cent of its 300,000-kilogram goal.
Food Bank spokesperson Tamisan Bencz-Knight noted that while they typically achieve at least 95 per cent of their food donation target, this year's 80 per cent figure is "probably the lowest we've received in food donations over the last five years."
Changing Donation Patterns in Edmonton
Bencz-Knight explained that the food bank has intentionally increased its monetary donation ask in recent years, a shift that has been met with adjustment from the public. "Edmontonians have always been good to us," she said, acknowledging that how people choose to give is evolving.
The spokesperson emphasized that the strong financial result, combined with the food bank's established relationships with vendors that enhance its purchasing power, will help bridge the gap left by the lower-than-expected food donations.
Looking Ahead: Rising Demand and Operational Adaptations
With 45 years of service and as many festive campaigns under its belt, Edmonton's Food Bank is no stranger to adapting to changing circumstances. Bencz-Knight predicts a continued increase in clients from a broad economic spectrum seeking assistance.
To meet this growing need, the organization has already implemented policy changes, including staying open seven days a week, with four of those days extending into evening hours.
"We're cautiously optimistic that we're going to be able to just keep plowing ahead and making sure that we can keep our doors open," Bencz-Knight stated. She reminded the community that food insecurity can impact anyone, from neighbours to colleagues, highlighting the universal nature of the need.
