Gen-Z Women Shift Priorities: 'Tradwife' Trend Gains Momentum
For generations, anthems like Roar by Katy Perry and Independent Women by Destiny's Child have championed female empowerment and career-driven success. However, a recent study indicates a notable pivot among gen-Z women, who are increasingly favoring the "tradwife" lifestyle over the relentless pursuit of professional achievements.
Survey Highlights Changing Values
Conducted by the online writing platform EduBirdie, the survey polled 2,000 women aged 18 to 29, presenting them with four distinct lifestyle models. The results revealed that 47% of respondents selected the tradwife path, characterized by traditional gender roles where women focus on family and homemaking while their husbands serve as the primary breadwinners.
Julia Alexeenko, a pop culture and media analyst at EduBirdie, explained this shift: "The 'girlboss' trend, which surged in the mid-2010s, pushed women to break glass ceilings, but it often led to burnout in an unbalanced system. After years of hustling, many women are simply exhausted and seeking more stability."
Decline of the 'Girlboss' Era
In contrast, only 23% of participants still aspire to the independent, career-focused lifestyle, even if it means prioritizing professional life over personal relationships. This decline underscores a growing desire for a calmer, less stressful existence. Alexeenko noted, "Gen Z measures power differently—by how much one can afford to not hustle. Traditional wives and girlbosses share similar core values, but the emphasis has shifted toward well-being and balance."
Alternative Lifestyles in the Mix
The study also explored other options:
- Digital Nomad Lifestyle: 16% of respondents chose a creative, childfree life focused on travel and remote work, though many acknowledged the challenges of authenticity and loneliness associated with this seemingly perfect online image.
- Trophy Wife Route: This option ranked last, with only 14% selecting it, as modern women view financial and emotional dependence as unrealistic and less desirable.
Seeking Harmony and Security
Alexeenko emphasized that the rise of trends like "tradwife" and "soft life" reflects a broader quest for harmony. "Research indicates that gen-Z women are more marriage-oriented than millennials, valuing calm routines and security. Their focus is on well-being and achieving a balanced life," she added.
This study highlights a significant cultural shift, where gen-Z women are redefining success not by career accolades but by personal fulfillment and stability in their home lives.
