The Ottawa Catholic School Board has confirmed it will maintain bus attendants for students with special needs, reversing any potential cuts to the service. The decision ensures continued support for vulnerable students during their daily commutes.
Board Confirms Commitment
In a statement released June 24, 2026, the board announced that attendants will remain on school buses for students requiring additional assistance. This move comes after concerns from parents and advocates about possible reductions due to budget pressures.
“We are committed to providing a safe and inclusive transportation environment for all our students,” said a board spokesperson. “Bus attendants play a critical role in supporting students with special needs, and we will continue to fund this service.”
Parent and Advocate Reaction
Parents had voiced worries that the board might eliminate attendants to cut costs, following similar moves by other Ontario school boards. Advocacy groups argued that attendants are essential for students with medical, behavioral, or mobility challenges.
“This is a huge relief for our family,” said a parent of a child with autism. “Without the attendant, my son wouldn’t be able to ride the bus safely.”
Funding and Future Outlook
The board did not specify how it will fund the continued service but noted that it has allocated resources from its transportation budget. The decision aligns with the Ontario government’s updated Student Transportation Policy, which emphasizes safety for students with special needs.
According to board data, approximately 1,200 students rely on bus attendants daily. The move ensures these students will continue to receive one-on-one support during transit.
