President Donald Trump on Wednesday expressed frustration over being overshadowed in the news cycle by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, whose endorsed candidates secured three primary victories in the city. In a post on Truth Social, Trump criticized media coverage of Mamdani's successes, which he claimed diverted attention from his own endorsements.
Trump Complains About Media Coverage
Trump lamented that his backing of 16 candidates in New York, Utah, Maryland, and South Carolina received minimal attention, despite his claims of a perfect record. He noted that Mamdani's endorsed candidates, whom he described as '3 solid Communists,' garnered 'loud and universal applause from the Fake News Media.' Trump wrote, 'Congratulations Mr. Mayor,' adding that his own efforts to elect 'wonderful American Patriots' earned 'zero media attention!!!'
Mamdani's Progressive Wins
Three progressive candidates backed by Mamdani defeated establishment incumbents, signaling momentum for his leftward push of the Democratic Party. Former City Comptroller Brad Lander beat two-term Rep. Dan Goldman, Assemblywoman Claire Valdez defeated Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso for an open congressional seat, and activist Darializa Avila Chevalier narrowly won against five-term Rep. Adriano Espaillat, chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. All three nominees are expected to win their deep blue districts, placing three Mamdani allies in Congress by January.
Trump's Early Morning Post
Earlier, at 2:38 a.m. ET, Trump posted another message alluding to Mamdani: 'America the Beautiful will NEVER be a Communist Country!!! President DJT.' The complaint followed a pattern of Trump seeking recognition for his electoral successes.
National Context
The New York results follow democratic socialist mayoral primary wins in Washington, D.C., and a runoff in Los Angeles. After the sweep, Mamdani posted a clip of Jalen Brunson from the New York Knicks parade, where the basketball star criticized detractors, likely aimed at Mamdani's opponents within the Democratic Party.
