Surrey RCMP have launched a public appeal to identify a woman who allegedly entered the neonatal intensive care unit at Surrey Memorial Hospital and held three infants against her bare chest.
Incident Details and Police Investigation
The unsettling event occurred on October 28, 2024, at approximately 6:55 a.m. According to police, an unidentified woman gained access to the secure NICU. Once inside, she removed her shirt and proceeded to make skin-to-skin contact with a newborn.
Authorities state that the woman repeated this act with two other infants in the unit. Sergeant Tige Pollock confirmed that the three babies are not related to each other or to the woman involved.
A vigilant staff member noticed the intruder and promptly alerted hospital security, who then removed the woman from the property. Surrey police were notified later that afternoon and have since classified the incident as an assault investigation.
What is Skin-to-Skin Contact?
Skin-to-skin contact, a common practice in neonatal care, involves placing a naked baby on a parent's bare chest. It is widely recommended for at least the first hour after birth to help the newborn adjust to life outside the womb.
For babies requiring care in a NICU, this practice is particularly encouraged as it has been proven to promote oxygen saturation and reduce stress levels. However, this crucial bonding practice is intended only for parents and guardians under medical supervision.
Ongoing Search for the Suspect
Despite reviewing security footage, interviewing hospital staff, and speaking with the affected families, investigators have been unable to identify the woman. In response, police have released a surveillance image hoping the public can assist.
The suspect is described as a white woman between 30 and 40 years old, approximately 5-foot-2 with a heavy build. At the time of the incident, she was wearing:
- A black hoodie with 'Essentials Department' on the chest
- Dirty grey sweatpants
- Cream-coloured sandals with black socks
- She was also carrying a camouflage-patterned jacket
Police have not released details on how the woman gained entry to the restricted unit or if she spoke with anyone during the incident. Sergeant Pollock noted that the specifics of her actions remain part of the active investigation.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Surrey Police at 604-599-0502 and reference file number 25-94777.
