London, Ontario Mayor Josh Morgan has publicly honoured an off-duty paramedic whose quick actions helped save lives after a jeep crashed through the wall of a fitness centre at Sherwood Forest Mall on June 12, 2026. The incident left seven people injured and prompted a large emergency response.
Crash and Immediate Response
The vehicle plowed into the GoodLife Fitness location at the mall, causing significant structural damage and trapping several individuals. According to the London Fire Department, crews worked to stabilize the building and extract those inside. The off-duty paramedic, who was at the scene when the crash occurred, immediately began triaging the injured and providing critical care before official responders arrived.
Mayor Morgan praised the paramedic's heroism during a city council meeting, stating, "This individual exemplifies the best of our community—selfless, skilled, and ready to act in the face of danger. We owe them our deepest gratitude." The paramedic's name has not been released publicly at their request.
Injuries and Investigation
Seven people were transported to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious. London police have confirmed that the driver of the jeep, a 34-year-old London resident, was arrested at the scene and faces charges of dangerous driving causing bodily harm. Investigators are examining whether a medical emergency or mechanical failure contributed to the crash.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the jeep tore through the gym wall. "There was a loud bang, then dust and debris everywhere. People were screaming," said mall employee Sarah Thompson. "The paramedic was already there helping before anyone else could react."
Community and Official Reactions
The mayor's recognition has been widely supported by local residents and first responder organizations. The Middlesex-London Paramedic Service issued a statement commending the off-duty member's actions, noting that "their training and composure under pressure undoubtedly prevented further harm."
Sherwood Forest Mall management announced temporary closure of the affected section for repairs, with the fitness centre expected to reopen in several weeks. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support the injured victims' recovery costs.
Ongoing Safety Review
City officials have called for a review of safety barriers at mall entrances and fitness facilities to prevent similar incidents. London police continue to investigate the crash and urge anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
Mayor Morgan concluded, "This event reminds us of the everyday heroes among us and the importance of community resilience. We will learn from this tragedy to make our public spaces safer."
