The emergency unfolded around 2 p.m. on Government Road West near Fifth Street, where a ruptured gas line created a potentially dangerous situation. Kirkland Lake Fire Department, Ontario Provincial Police, and Enbridge Gas all responded to what officials described as a "major leak."
"We're dealing with a significant natural gas leak that requires immediate action to ensure public safety," said Kirkland Lake Fire Chief Jamie Aureppen. "The evacuation is a necessary precaution while we work to secure the area."
Emergency Response in Action
Emergency services quickly established a safety perimeter around the leak site, closing multiple streets to traffic and pedestrians. Residents and businesses within the affected area were ordered to evacuate immediately.
The evacuation zone included properties along Government Road West between Fifth and Sixth Streets, with emergency crews going door-to-door to ensure everyone left the danger zone. The nearby Museum of Northern History was also evacuated as a precautionary measure.
