Bitter Arctic Blast Grips Calgary: Extreme Wind Chill Warning for Wednesday
Arctic Blast: Calgary Faces -40°C Wind Chill Wednesday

Calgary is bracing for a brutal Arctic onslaught Wednesday morning as temperatures plummet to dangerous levels, with wind chill values making it feel like -40°C in some areas.

Environment Canada has issued extreme cold warnings for the region, warning that the combination of frigid temperatures and strong winds will create potentially hazardous conditions for anyone venturing outdoors.

Frostbite Danger in Minutes

"The wind chill will certainly be noticed Wednesday morning," said CTV News Calgary meteorologist Steve Rothfels. "We're looking at wind chill values between -30 and -40, which means exposed skin can develop frostbite in less than 10 minutes."

The mercury is expected to drop to overnight lows around -24°C, but the biting northwest winds at 20-30 km/h will make it feel significantly colder. The extreme conditions are expected to persist through the morning commute before gradually moderating through the day.

Protecting Yourself from the Deep Freeze

Health officials are urging residents to take precautions:

  • Dress in layers with wind-resistant outerwear
  • Cover all exposed skin, including face and hands
  • Watch for signs of frostbite (numbness, white patches)
  • Limit time outdoors, especially during morning hours
  • Check on elderly neighbors and ensure pets are brought inside

The extreme cold comes as an Arctic air mass settles over southern Alberta, creating some of the most challenging winter conditions Calgarians have faced this season. While temperatures are expected to improve slightly by afternoon, the morning hours will present the most severe risk.

Emergency services are reminding residents that these conditions can affect anyone, regardless of age or health status, and that proper preparation is essential for staying safe during this Arctic blast.
