ATP's Wizard of Oz Review: A Magical Family Triumph in Calgary
ATP's Wizard of Oz: A Magical Family Triumph

Alberta Theatre Projects (ATP), in collaboration with Forte Musical Theatre, has conjured a genuine theatrical spell with its new production of the classic The Wizard of Oz. This family-friendly spectacle, which opened in early December 2025, delivers a magical experience that resonates with both children and adults, a balance that director Tracey Power and musical director Joe Slabe have masterfully achieved.

A Visual and Theatrical Feast

The production's success is built on a foundation of remarkable creativity from its design team. Narda McCarroll's work on sets, lighting, and props, combined with Ralamy Kneeshaw's vibrant costumes and Van Wilmott's immersive sound effects, creates a world that is as visually stunning as it is humorous and heartfelt. The magic of Oz comes alive with flying characters—Glinda, the Wicked Witch, and even a monkey—and classic moments like the witch's melting disappearance. A highlight is the inclusion of Dorothy's faithful dog, Toto, and the infectious energy of a 10-member youth ensemble who play the Munchkins and Winkies.

Standout Performances Bring Oz to Life

The cast delivers performances full of charm and character. Hannah Adamson portrays Dorothy with a wide-eyed wonder that gradually transforms into determined leadership, capturing the story's emotional core about home and unconditional love. The trio travelling the Yellow Brick Road is particularly strong: Ryan Maschke's incredibly agile Scarecrow, Jason Lemmon's creaky yet cheeky Tin Man, and Kevin Corey's hilariously goofy Cowardly Lion provide perfect comic relief and heart.

Daniela Vlaskalic takes on the challenging role of the Wicked Witch, offering a more stern and less cackling interpretation, first seen as the threatening Miss Almira Gulch. Veteran actor Christopher Hunt is perfectly cast as the charismatic yet ultimately fraudulent Wizard, whose earlier guise as Professor Marvel in Kansas cleverly foreshadows the reveal behind the curtain.

A Triumph of Collaborative Theatre

This production, reviewed in early December 2025, stands as a testament to the power of collaborative arts in Calgary. It proves that a beloved story can be reinvented for the stage with fresh energy while preserving its timeless message. The combined efforts of ATP and Forte Musical Theatre have resulted in a wonderfully theatrical event that reminds audiences of all ages that there truly is no place like home—and no experience quite like live, imaginative theatre.
