The timeless appeal of Jane Austen's novels of manners continues to captivate audiences 250 years after her birth. To mark this major literary milestone, the streaming service BritBox has unveiled an extensive, six-month programming event titled Austen Forever, dedicated entirely to the beloved author's work and enduring influence.
A Regency Feast for Fans
The celebration, which launched on December 5, is a veritable feast for 'Janeites' and anglophiles alike. BritBox is leveraging its vast library of British content to present a curated slate of film and television adaptations based on Austen's six completed novels: Emma, Persuasion, Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park, Pride and Prejudice, and Northanger Abbey. The platform has even added a thematic Regency-era yule log for viewers seeking to create an authentic Austen-esque ambiance.
"Austen Forever builds on our vast library of great British storytelling while honouring Austen's impact and building momentum for more of the stories and experiences coming soon to BritBox," said Diana Pessin, BritBox's chief marketing officer, in a statement.
Lineup of Classic Adaptations and New Premieres
The initial launch included several notable titles. Fans can now stream the 1995 cult classic Clueless (a modern retelling of Emma), the 1996 film Emma starring Gwyneth Paltrow, and the North American premiere of the three-part documentary Jane Austen: The Rise of a Genius.
The celebration is far from over, with a scheduled rollout of more beloved films throughout the winter and spring:
- January 2: Persuasion (1995)
- February 6: Sense and Sensibility (1995)
- March 6: Mansfield Park (1999)
- April 3: Bridget Jones's Diary (2001) and the 2005 version of Pride & Prejudice starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen.
A Spotlight on The Other Bennet Sister
One of the most anticipated new offerings is the 10-episode series The Other Bennet Sister, which will receive its North American premiere on BritBox this spring. Based on Janice Hadlow's 2020 novel of the same name, the series shifts the focus to Mary Bennet, the often-overlooked middle sister from Pride and Prejudice.
The series stars Ella Bruccoleri as Mary, with Richard E. Grant and Ruth Jones taking on the roles of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. While a specific premiere date has not been announced, BritBox released promotional photography for the series this week.
"It's very exciting to think that Mary Bennet will soon be coming to our screens, taking centre stage at last in the story Jane Austen never gave her," author Janice Hadlow said in a statement.
This expansive programming event underscores the remarkable and lasting legacy of Jane Austen, whose sharp social commentary and unforgettable characters continue to inspire conventions, merchandise, and fresh adaptations for new generations of fans around the world.
