Windsor's premier sports celebration is set to receive a significant boost of international star power this year. The organizers of the Windsor/Essex County Sports Persons of the Year (WESPY) Awards announced on Tuesday that Italian soccer legend Alessandro Del Piero will serve as the keynote speaker for the 19th edition of the event.
World Cup Champion Brings Global Prestige to Local Event
Alessandro Del Piero, who played a crucial role in Italy's 2006 FIFA World Cup championship victory, represents a landmark selection for the WESPY Awards. The 51-year-old former striker participated in three World Cup tournaments and four UEFA European Football Championships during his illustrious international career, and he remains tied for fourth place on Italy's all-time national team scoring list.
"We try to spread it around sports wise," explained WESPY founder Dominic Papa. "This summer, the big event in Canada is the World Cup. Being that we've never had a soccer player as the keynote speaker and the World Cup is right around the corner, we thought we would get a soccer person in."
Del Piero's Distinguished Career and Current Role
Del Piero spent the majority of his professional career with Juventus, though he also played for Padova, Sydney FC, and Delhi Dynamos before concluding his playing days after the 2014 season. Since 2015, he has worked as a prominent analyst for Sky Sports Italy while maintaining his connection to international soccer as a World Cup ambassador.

"It's the athletes, coaches and teams that need to get the attention."
Papa compared Del Piero's stature to that of 17th edition keynote speaker Jack Nicklaus, noting that "when he was in his prime, he was amongst the best players in the world." The founder expressed particular excitement about the messages Del Piero might share with attendees, saying "He'll have some great stories for the athletes there. A lot of keynote speakers have brought different messages and he will as well. I just think, with him, it seems like he's an incredibly determined individual, even today, and that's a great message to athletes and coaches."
