A significant water main break in the Bowness neighborhood of Calgary on Friday has left approximately 50 homes without water, according to city officials. Emergency water wagons are being provided to affected residents as crews work to repair the rupture.
Details of the Break
The break occurred on Friday morning at 6148 Bowness Road N.W., near the edge of the area's main business district. City crews were seen preparing to dig up a section of the road to access and fix the damaged pipe. No water was flowing overland at the scene, but the disruption has left dozens of homes dry.
City officials assured residents that repairs are being prioritized. In a social media post, the city stated: "City crews are working to complete repairs as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding while this repair is underway."
Unrelated to Previous Issues
This water main break is not connected to the ongoing problems with the Bearspaw South feeder main, which has caused significant disruptions in the area twice in less than two years. That feeder main, a five-decade-old pipe that supplies 60 percent of Calgary's water, ruptured in June 2024 on 16 Avenue near Home Road, leading to weeks of water rationing and traffic disruptions. A subsequent rupture on December 30, 2025, on 16 Avenue near Sarcee Trail further impacted residents and businesses in Bowness and Montgomery.
Residents of Bowness are no strangers to water main issues. The previous breaks forced many to rely on water wagons for days, and reinforcement work on the Bearspaw line led to nearly a month of city-wide water restrictions. However, city officials have confirmed that Friday's break is a separate incident.
Community Response
Water wagons are now available for the approximately 50 homes affected by the break. The city has not provided an estimated timeline for repairs but emphasized that crews are working diligently to restore service. Residents are advised to follow city updates for further information.
This incident highlights ongoing infrastructure challenges in Calgary, particularly with aging water mains. The Bearspaw South feeder main, which is badly deteriorated, has been a focal point of concern, but Friday's break underscores the need for broader system maintenance.
