Community members in London, Ontario, gathered on Saturday to mark the fifth anniversary of a deadly attack that killed four members of the Afzaal family. Salman Afzaal, his wife Madiha Salman, their daughter Yumnah Afzaal, and Afzaal’s 74-year-old mother Talat were killed on June 6, 2021, while out for an evening stroll. The only survivor was nine-year-old Fayez Afzaal.
Memorial events and reflections
The anniversary was observed with a vigil at the site of the attack, where speakers emphasized the need to combat Islamophobia and promote unity. Attendees laid flowers and shared memories of the victims. Local leaders, including Mayor Josh Morgan, expressed solidarity with the Muslim community and condemned hate-motivated violence.
Ongoing impact
The attack, which was considered one of the worst hate crimes in Canada in recent years, led to national discussions about Islamophobia and prompted policy changes. A suspect was arrested and charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. The case remains in the legal system.
Community organizers noted that while progress has been made, much work remains to ensure safety and inclusion for all. The anniversary serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle against hatred and the importance of standing together.
