Police Investigation
The Anishinabek Police Service is investigating the incident, which occurred in the community of Garden River First Nation, located near Sault Ste. Marie. Authorities suspect the substance was not cannabis but a toxic drug, possibly laced with fentanyl or another opioid. Toxicology results are pending.
“This is a devastating loss for the family and the community,” said a police spokesperson. “We urge everyone to be extremely cautious, as street drugs can be contaminated with deadly substances.”
Community Response
Garden River First Nation leaders expressed shock and grief. Chief Karen Bird issued a statement calling for increased awareness and support for addiction services. “Words cannot capture the pain of losing a young life to poisoned drugs. We must work together to prevent further tragedies.”
The incident highlights the ongoing opioid crisis affecting Indigenous communities across Canada. In 2025, Northern Ontario saw a 15% rise in overdose deaths, many linked to fentanyl.
Support services are available for those struggling with substance use. The community plans to hold a vigil in the coming days.
