In recent years, many everyday digital services have increasingly volunteered users for features they never requested. Lately, these unsolicited additions frequently involve artificial intelligence integrations. While not inherently negative—some AI features offer genuine innovation and utility—many users simply desire their tools to function as they did previously. This sentiment is particularly strong regarding Google Search, which now prominently displays AI overviews atop every query, altering the familiar, reliable search experience.
Two Reliable Methods to Circumvent AI Overviews
Fortunately, internet communities have developed and tested effective workarounds to purge search results of unwanted AI influence. These methods restore traditional search functionality without requiring permanent changes to your settings.
The On-The-Spot Exclusion Method
For immediate, query-specific control, you can append "-AI" or "-ai" to your search terms. This technique functions similarly to other search modifiers, such as placing phrases in quotation marks, and provides a straightforward way to exclude AI overview results without committing to a permanent adjustment.
For instance, when researching norovirus, searching "norovirus symptoms -ai" will yield results devoid of the AI overview panel. This method offers flexibility, allowing you to decide when to engage with AI-generated summaries.
The Backend Opt-Out Method for Chrome
A more comprehensive solution for Chrome users, originally highlighted by Yunaluvgames on Instagram and Android Authority, enables efficient removal of AI overviews from daily searches. This approach ensures you only encounter AI summaries when explicitly desired.
Begin by navigating to Chrome's Settings and selecting "Search Engine," or directly enter chrome://settings/searchEngines in your address bar. Proceed to "Manage Search Engines and Site Search" and click "Add" under Site Search. Input the following details into the new fields:
- Name: AI Free Web
- Shortcut: @web
- URL with %s in place of query: {google:baseURL}search?q=%s&udm=14
After adding this "AI Free Web" option, set it as your default search engine by clicking the three vertical dots beside it and selecting "Make Default." This restores the classic search engine functionality.
Firefox users can implement the same change by accessing Preferences, then Search, and entering the identical information. Once configured, your search results will filter out unwanted AI overviews. Currently, such straightforward workarounds remain limited for mobile devices.
Why Users Seek AI-Free Search Experiences
Opinions on AI overviews vary widely. Some appreciate them for quick answers to trivial queries, like identifying a character from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Others express frustration over questionable sourcing and errors. Andrey Meshkov, co-founder and CTO of AdGuard, emphasized to HuffPost, "These AI-generated summaries are often unreliable and can feature outright incorrect or misleading information."
Inaccurate AI responses can have serious consequences. Meshkov cited a notorious example where an AI overview suggested drinking urine to treat kidney stones, highlighting potential dangers, especially for medical advice.
Yvette Schmitter, CEO of Fusion Collective, raised concerns about the "opaque" nature of these services. She noted that much remains experimental, with unclear criteria for information weighting and source identification. This opacity raises critical questions: "What happens if the AI summary—which may or may not be influenced by sponsored results—contradicts the information in search results? Why are they different? What is accurate?" Schmitter argued that without transparency, the AI feature adds no value and undermines trust.
For those unimpressed with current AI overviews and yearning for the pre-AI Google experience, these hacks offer a practical solution. The original version of this story was previously published on HuffPost.
