In a display of remarkable resilience and skill, Canadian tennis player Liam Draxl emerged as the hero for Team Canada during the Davis Cup Qualifiers First Round tie held at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Overcoming Adversity on the Court
The 24-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ontario, faced significant challenges during his Saturday night singles match against Brazil's Gustavo Heide. After establishing a strong 4-2 lead, Draxl suffered an ankle sprain that forced a medical timeout. Despite the setback, he returned to the court with his right ankle taped and maintained his competitive edge.
"I just rolled it a little bit," Draxl explained afterward. "I was a little nervous and it hurt for about 30 seconds, but I felt no pain with the ankle tests and thought I would probably be alright. It didn't affect the effort."
Draxl demonstrated exceptional focus following the injury, drilling backhand and cross-court winners to break Heide and secure a 6-3 first set victory. In the second set, he broke his opponent again to go up 4-3 with a perfectly placed looping return that caught the baseline, ultimately serving out for a 6-4 win.
A Career-Defining Moment
The victory marked a significant milestone for Draxl, who described it as "probably the biggest match of my career and most pressure I've had." He emphasized the emotional weight of representing his country, stating, "It means so much for me to play for your flag and country and book a spot for September."
Draxl's performance throughout the weekend showcased his growing maturity as a player. On Friday, he delivered a dominant 6-3, 6-3 victory over Joao Lucas Reis Da Silva in just 76 minutes at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. His Saturday triumph came just 2.5 hours after he and partner Cleeve Harper suffered a tough doubles loss to Brazilian pair Orlando Luz and Rafael Matos, who reached the quarter-finals of the 2026 Australian Open.
Team Canada's Collective Effort
While Draxl provided the decisive victory, the team effort was essential to Canada's success. Gabriel Diallo, ranked 39th in the ATP, rebounded from a disappointing Friday performance to deliver a crucial 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(4) victory over Matheus Pucinelli De Almeida of Brazil. This win set the stage for Draxl's clinching performance in the fifth and deciding match.
"We had incredible character today," said Canada's captain Frank Dancevic. "It's not easy coming back after tough losses and then having to come back and win the match to keep the tie alive. Credit to him (Diallo) in the third set. That was a huge mental barrier for him to break in Davis Cup. A lot on his shoulders."
Diallo reflected on his improved performance, noting, "I wanted to play the important moments with a little more conviction and I showcased it in the tie-breaker with my game. I controlled myself and didn't let my opponent dictate and happy to do it under a lot of pressure."

The victory advances Canada to the Second Qualifiers in September, where they will face either Slovakia or France for a chance to reach the final eight of the prestigious international team competition. Draxl expressed confidence in the team's culture and preparation, stating, "What I keep learning about myself and this team is that we lay it all out there and doing all the right things in practice and preparation. We fight so hard for every point and leave it all out there. It's a credit to the culture we have."
