The Moncton Wildcats have officially submitted a bid to host the 2028 Memorial Cup, the Canadian Hockey League's premier championship tournament. The team's announcement on July 6, 2026, places them in contention alongside other undisclosed franchises for the rights to stage the event.
Bid Details and Community Support
Wildcats president and general manager Ritchie Thibeau expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating, "Hosting the Memorial Cup would be a tremendous honour for Moncton and a showcase for our passionate hockey community." The bid includes plans for renovations to the Avenir Centre, the team's home arena, to meet CHL standards for the tournament.
Economic and Cultural Impact
If successful, the 2028 Memorial Cup would bring an estimated $10 million in economic benefits to the region, according to a study cited by the Wildcats. The event typically draws thousands of fans from across Canada and generates significant tourism revenue. Moncton previously hosted the Memorial Cup in 2006, when the Wildcats reached the final but lost to the Quebec Remparts.
Competing Bids and Selection Timeline
Other potential host cities have not been publicly confirmed, but the CHL is expected to announce the winning bid by early 2027. The Wildcats face competition from teams in the Ontario Hockey League and Western Hockey League. Thibeau noted, "We have a strong track record of hosting major events, and we believe Moncton is ready to welcome the hockey world again."
