The Essex Windsor Solid Waste Authority (EWSWA) has announced that fees for storm-related garbage disposal are being waived for residents in Ottawa and Essex County following severe weather events that caused widespread damage.
Fee waiver details
Effective immediately, residents can drop off storm debris at designated waste depots without charge. The waiver covers branches, leaves, and other organic storm debris, as well as damaged household items such as furniture and appliances. The authority stated that the measure is intended to help communities recover from the recent storms that brought high winds, heavy rain, and flooding.
"We understand that many residents are dealing with significant cleanup, and we want to remove any financial barriers to proper disposal," said an EWSWA spokesperson. "This fee waiver will remain in effect until further notice, but we encourage residents to take advantage of it as soon as possible."
Where to dispose
Residents can bring storm-related waste to the following locations: the Ottawa Waste Management Facility, the Essex County landfill, and several temporary drop-off points that have been set up in affected neighborhoods. The authority advises residents to separate organic debris from non-organic waste to expedite processing. Hazardous materials, such as chemicals or propane tanks, are not accepted under the waiver and must be handled separately.
According to EWSWA, the waiver applies only to residential waste generated by the storms. Commercial and industrial waste is not eligible. Residents are asked to bring identification and proof of residence to the disposal sites.
Community impact
The storms that hit the region last week caused downed trees, power outages, and property damage. In some areas, flooding led to waterlogged basements and damaged belongings. The fee waiver is part of a broader recovery effort that includes municipal crews clearing public roads and parks.
"This is a great help for our community," said Ottawa resident Marie Leclerc, who lost a large tree in her backyard. "We have so much debris, and it would have cost us hundreds of dollars to dispose of it all. This waiver is a relief."
The authority has also reminded residents to check for any additional storm-related services, such as curbside pickup of large items, which may be available in their municipality.
