Sault College Appoints Sherri Smith as Permanent President

Sault College has named Sherri Smith as its permanent president, ending a search that saw her serve as interim leader since the departure of the previous president. Smith, who has more than 19 years of experience at the college, previously held the role of vice-president, academics, innovation and student success.

Interim to Permanent Transition

Smith stepped into the interim president role after former president Dr. Ron Common left the institution in 2025. During her tenure as interim, she oversaw the college's strategic planning and continued its focus on student success and innovation. The board of governors conducted a comprehensive search before offering her the permanent position.

“Sherri has demonstrated exceptional leadership during a critical time for the college,” said board chair John Malloy in a statement. “Her deep understanding of our institution and commitment to our students and community make her the ideal candidate to lead Sault College into the future.”

Background and Experience

Smith began her career at Sault College in 2007 as a faculty member in the business program. She later moved into administrative roles, including dean of the school of business and hospitality, before becoming vice-president. She holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Toronto and has been involved in numerous provincial and national initiatives related to post-secondary education.

According to the college, Smith was chosen for her collaborative approach and her track record of fostering partnerships with Indigenous communities, local businesses, and other educational institutions. Under her leadership, the college has expanded its online learning offerings and launched new programs in areas like cybersecurity and renewable energy.

Community and Staff Reactions

Faculty and staff have expressed support for the appointment. “Sherri is a known quantity who has earned respect across the campus,” said Jennifer Davis, president of the Sault College Faculty Association. “Her experience and vision will serve the college well.”

Smith herself said she is honored by the appointment. “Sault College is a special place with dedicated people,” she said. “I look forward to building on our strengths and ensuring our students have the skills they need to succeed in a changing world.”

Strategic Priorities

In her new role, Smith will focus on implementing the college's strategic plan, which includes increasing enrollment, enhancing student supports, and deepening ties with the local community. The college also aims to expand its applied research capacity and continue its work in truth and reconciliation with Indigenous partners.

Sault College serves approximately 2,500 full-time students and offers over 50 programs. It has campuses in Sault Ste. Marie, with satellite locations in other parts of Northern Ontario.
