In the May 29, 2026 edition of the Toronto Sun, readers share their perspectives on a range of topics, from American emigration to Canada to hockey rivalries and separatist movements.
Why Would Americans Emigrate to Canada?
Larry Sylvester of Acton, Ontario, questions the motivations behind Americans moving to Canada. He argues that the United States offers higher salaries, greater purchasing power, and unequivocal freedom under its Constitution. He also notes that Canada's military is weak, natural resources are restricted by environmentalists, and the Charter of Rights includes limits. Sylvester concludes that perhaps Canadians are simply more polite. The editor adds that Canada is a great country with opportunities for those willing to contribute, and it would be interesting to see the numbers of Americans who come and then return.
Hate for the Habs
Jay Kinnear of Burlington, Ontario, responds to a previous letter about the Carolina Hurricanes. He expresses his deep-rooted hatred for the Montreal Canadiens as a Leafs fan, noting that it's hard to see a Leaf player this time of year unless you know their golf membership. He asks who readers are rooting for in next year's playoffs, ending with a cheer for the Habs. The editor replies with a simple "Leafs all the way!"
A Fair Deal for Alberta
Bill Vernon comments on the separatist movement in Alberta, noting that Quebec has held two referendums and is planning a third, yet Alberta is criticized for merely considering separation. He points out that Alberta provides jobs and transfer payments to other provinces, and that a fair economic deal would quell separatist ideas, unlike Quebec's desire for a distinct society. The editor notes the double standard, including a Bloc MP defending Alberta's right to make such decisions.
