Ontario Provincial Police Boost Road and Water Patrols

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have announced increased patrols on both roadways and waterways across the province ahead of the Canada Day long weekend. The initiative aims to enhance public safety by targeting impaired driving, speeding, and boating under the influence.

Enhanced Enforcement Measures

OPP officers will be conducting RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) spot checks and marine unit patrols throughout the holiday period. The marine unit, often seen on lakes and rivers, will focus on ensuring boaters have proper safety equipment and are not operating vessels while intoxicated. According to OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt, "Our goal is to prevent tragedies and ensure everyone enjoys a safe holiday."

Recent Incidents Highlight Risks

The announcement follows a series of incidents on Ontario roads and waterways. In Innisfil, police reported a driver caught traveling 50 km/h over the speed limit. Additionally, a mobility scooter driver in Sudbury sustained serious injuries after colliding with a pickup truck. On the water, five people were rescued after a boat sank in British Columbia waters, underscoring the dangers of recreational boating.

Heat Warning and Safety Tips

Southern Ontario is under a heat warning with temperatures soaring into the high 30s Celsius. The OPP advises motorists to stay hydrated, avoid leaving children or pets in parked vehicles, and plan for rest stops. For boaters, wearing life jackets and checking weather forecasts are critical. "Heat can impair judgment as much as alcohol," Schmidt added.

Community Response

Local communities are preparing for Canada Day festivities despite the heat. Parade organizers are taking precautions to protect participants from extreme temperatures. Sandpoint Beach remains closed as the city works on its Master Plan phases, but other cooling centers and pools are open across the province.
