Extreme weather has forced the cancellation of the east London Canada Day gathering, but downtown festivities are still set to go ahead, organizers announced Monday.
East London event cancelled due to heat, storms
The decision to cancel the east London celebration was made after Environment Canada issued both a heat warning and a severe thunderstorm watch for the region. Temperatures were expected to soar into the high 30s Celsius, with humidex values making it feel even hotter. Organizers cited safety concerns for both attendees and volunteers as the primary reason for the cancellation.
“We are disappointed, but the safety of our community comes first,” said a spokesperson for the east London event. The gathering, which typically includes live music, children’s activities, and food vendors, was scheduled to take place at a local park.
Downtown festivities to proceed
Despite the cancellation in the east end, the main Canada Day celebrations in downtown London will continue as planned. The city confirmed that the downtown event, featuring a concert and fireworks display, will proceed with enhanced heat safety measures. “We have added water stations, misting tents, and first aid stations to help people stay cool,” said a city official.
The fireworks show, scheduled for 10 p.m., is expected to draw thousands of spectators to Victoria Park. Organizers advise attendees to bring water, wear sunscreen, and take breaks in shaded areas.
Heat warning in effect
Environment Canada’s heat warning for London and surrounding areas remains in effect through Tuesday. The agency warns that the combination of high temperatures and humidity poses a risk of heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Vulnerable populations, including seniors and young children, are urged to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure.
According to the Canadian Red Cross, heat-related illnesses can escalate quickly. “Stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during peak heat, and check on neighbours who may be at risk,” a Red Cross spokesperson advised.
Other Canada Day changes across the region
Several other communities in southwestern Ontario have also adjusted their Canada Day plans due to the extreme weather. In Windsor, the afternoon parade was moved to the evening, while in Sarnia, the fireworks were postponed to a later date. London’s downtown event remains one of the few major celebrations still on schedule.
For those unable to attend in person, the city will livestream the concert and fireworks on its website. “We want everyone to enjoy Canada Day safely, whether that’s at the park or at home,” the city official added.
